The Colors of November

November 25th, 2012

Yesterday was National Small Business Day. We had a great turn out at the shop. Lee and I were both there greeting people and helping them make off with pottery galore and Mom’s Stuff Salve.

As always the best part of the day for us is meeting wonderful people and hanging out. Please think about dropping by next Saturday December 1. We will be there.

Sale Day Tomorrow

November 22nd, 2012

img_8495.JPG
While Lee roasted the bird I went with Zina, Caleb, Angus and Davey O. and unloaded the kiln. This is what I do every Thanksgiving. We don’t go away for the day because I need to be here getting things ready for the sale. It is not a Black Friday sale, just a chanc efor our friends to come a see what I have been up to since I left off river running.

Olive Us and loading the kiln

November 20th, 2012

Last July Gabrielle and Ben Blair of Design Mom brought their kids to the shop and filmed this little clip for their web based TV show Olive Us. Today Gabrielle posted a blog about their visit featuring the clip. She also posted a nice blog about Mom’s Stuff back in September.

The Last Pots of 2012

November 15th, 2012

img_8356.jpg
Visiting Das Cafe a day ago I caught a friend enjoying her coffee in one of the cups I made for them earlier this year. It minded be that I should make some more for the next firing. I finished throwing and trimming and am now firing a bisque in preparation for a glaze firing next week in the wood burner.

I am making a few more covered bowls like the one on the card because everyone wants to have one like the pot on the card.

Well, the sun came up and the world apparently will go on. This is the view from the intersection where the pottery shop sits looking away from the shop. It is a nice quiet spot considering it is on the main street of the town that calls itself a city. When Spring City was incorporated in 1870 or so, the population was large enough to warrant that title. It could not qualify today. I like it small but Spring City does have a nice ring to it.

Yesterday I voted and made pots. Both privileges that I don’t take lightly. I love the feel of wet clay moving in my hands about as much as anything. Rowing a boat and spading up good soil are other things that come to mind. I’ll throw in there the feel of her hand in mine just for good measure.

Steve Bartholomew and his wife Rhonda came by on their way home from a foot race in Richfield and we made some pots or shall I say they took pictures and visited while I made pots. Later we got Lee and went to Das Cafe for some roast beef and red cabbage that was to die for.

The accidental Entreprenuers.

November 1st, 2012

img_0309.JPG
Yesterday Lee and I spoke at Snow College’s Entrepreneurial Seminar. I was a little bemused when the invitation came simply because we have never thought of ourselves as entrepreneurs. If an entrepreneur is “an enterprising individual who builds capital through risk and/or initiative”. Then I suppose we are. There certainly is a fair amount of risk involved and initiative required to make it as artists in this economy. We had a good time and I hope the students got something they can use. I began by reading Wedell Berry’s “Manifesto: The Mad Farmer’s Liberation Front“. I talked about Dicken’s character Jacob Marley and his regrets about having spent his career concerned with “the dealings of my trade” instead of the real business of the common welfare of Mankind. Ed Abbey said that “Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell”. When it was over the director said it was unique in the history of their seminars. I’ll bet. THat is what they get for inviting old hippies to talk about business.
Pictured above are Lee, me, Allan Christensen and Jamee Wheelwright.

In other news the wheel keeps cranking out holiday bargains for the upcoming sale days just a few weeks off.

The Potter’s Meal and platters

October 26th, 2012

img_8163.JPG
The day began fairly normal with me making 15 pound lumps of clay like this into platters that I will stamp mottos and slogans into later.

Steve Olpin our long time film making friend showed up last night so he could spend the day shooting Lee in her studio. Here is Adah star of Steve’s 1993 classic “The Potter’s Meal” hanging out on the set. Steve is making a various short films to post on his YouTube chanel.

24 Plates for the Holiday Sale

October 22nd, 2012

img_8150.JPG
I made twenty four plates and stamped them with little slogans. The the slogans are things I would like to invite people to consider and live by perhaps. They are slogans that I have tried to integrate into my life. Some successfully and others not yet fully realized but works in progress.

I also trimmed eighteen pie dishes from Saturdays throwing. The Holidays are upon me and I need to get a firing off before I go under the knife for knee replacement.
