    Dear Joe,
Thank you for including me in this notice of your dear father’s passing. I have been reading along in the emails from my cousins and knew you had arrived there in MO. I have wonderful memories of spending time in Owen’s office at BYU where I would stop by often and enjoy good conversation and learning too. What I recall learning the most what how to treat others. In later years when Rosalia and I visited him in Stark City (1987) I was happy for my wife to get to know my extended family which began with you in the 82-86 visits while we were in Colorado and continued building with that visit to your mom and dad. We are all blessed to be related to good people like your dad. Please extend my heartfelt love and condolences to your mom and family.
    Love,
    Paul

  2. Roald Says:

Very nicely done cousin Joe. My best recollection of Uncle Owen was when he took me with him to milk a cow. I do not know how he found the time for me, but I appreciated and still do his attention to a nephew.

  3. Janet Bennion Says:

Now the two brothers are together. How much your dad’s face reminds me of Colin, the way the frowning grin cuts down through the chin. At the reunion in Montana a few years ago, Owen sang “Oh, Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie,” and made me cry because he did it just as dad used to. I will miss him. Thanks for the recollection, Joe. Well done.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for putting your dad’s obituary in the website. I have to say–you did not fall far from the tree re: the pictures of him! I’m so glad I got to meet him in the diningroom of your old home (and your mom, too). What a good spirit. I know he’s happy where’s he’s landed.

    Blessings,

    Alyssa

  6. Larry Christensen Says:

To the family of Owen C. Bennion,

Those of us from the 1960’s who were fortunate enough to have been taught by Owen C. Bennion at Brigham Young High School, recall his warmth and discipline. He taught us well. He is frequently mentioned as one of our favorite teachers at reunions.

One of his techniques was to ask students to teach a concept to the class in rotation. The one scientific principle I remember most is collodial suspensions, which I had to teach, and I have applied its properties to many other physical and human behavior situations in years after that.

I recall that he did not like debate classes and extemporaneous speaking, because he felt like BYH students assumed some license to speak out and make sarcastic comments, even in his science classes.

Whenever we had science questions, he was the one we turned to. We turned to him, for example, when pigeons were being decimated at our school, and he is mentioned in a story I wrote about that.

I have posted his obituary in his faculty profile on the BYH website.
We are grateful that he was our teacher.

    Sincerely,

    Larry Christensen
    San Diego, CA

  7. Joel Murphy Says:

Joe, Lee and family — my warmest condelescenes to you at this time, as I have stated to you previously, your father was one of my favorite teachers at BY High. We both shared the same “off-beat” sense of humor and had a great relationship during all of those years. He was truly a unique individual and had a wealth of knowledge to share — I will always have fond memories of his science classes and wil be forever grateful for his dedication to his work, especially with the challenges that came with our studentbody. Please give our warmest regards and sympathy to your Mother and siblings, wish I could be there for her memorial services.
Respectfully — Joel Murphy / BY High Class of 1967

  8. Bernell Cloward Says:

    Well done Joe!

His missionary pic looks just like you! And it sounds like you are more like him and like similar things, such as gardening and backpacking, than I would have guessed. Too bad I didn’t get to know him better, the only interaction I recall was when ‘Ol Horsefeathers’ was getting after me and the other neighborhood brats for picking on you at about age 10-12! It would have been fun to talk with him and get to know him after I grew up - sounds like he was a pretty great guy!

    My condolences,
    Your friend
    Bernell
